No one wants to suffer from mouth pain especially if it sore and swollen gums, which in some cases can cause bleeding.  There are a variety of causes for sore and swollen gums, although the most common is gingivitis.  The infection is found in gum tissue and affects around 47 percent of American adults, according to the American Dental Association.  Luckily, there are a few simple ways to treat and relieve sore and swollen gums.

In some cases, the swelling of the gums can cause jaw and other types of mouth pain.  One of the most effective methods to temporarily treat the pain is to an anti-inflammatory medication such as ibuprofen.  The medication will relieve the swelling and pain for a temporary period before you seek attention from a dental professional.

Cold Compress

One of the best ways to relieve swollen gums is to apply a cold compress of some sort, whether it is an ice pack or frozen vegetables, to the affected area.  Make sure to apply the compress to the skin over the gums and not inside the mouth.  The coldness should numb your mouth and relieve some of the pain as well as reduce the inflammation.  It is best if you apple a cold compress the swollen area a few times a day.
