New Year’s Toothbrush

Replacing toothbrushes

Make sure you replace your toothbrush every three to four months to ensure they are healthy!

As you start preparing for the New Year ahead, there is one thing that should be left behind in 2015: your toothbrush. When was the last time you changed your toothbrush? If you can’t remember, now is the time to replace it with a fresh one!

How Often Should I Replace My Toothbrush?

According to most dentists, you should replace your toothbrush every three to four months. Just like anything else, toothbrushes get worn around so if you notice your brush looks frayed or worn out, it is time to replace it. A frayed toothbrush won’t work as well to clean your mouth and teeth properly. You should also replace your brush if you have been sick recently as this brushes can harbor germs. Children should have their toothbrushes changed more often because they often brush more vigorously than the adults in your home.

Why Should You Change Your Toothbrush?

Studies have shown that after three months of daily wear-and-tear, your toothbrush becomes less effective in removing the plaque and germs from your teeth and gums.  The bristles of your toothbrush become stretched out and do not conform to your teeth as they once did. These bristles can break down, losing their effectiveness. Old brushes can also contain bacteria and fungus that could negatively affect your health.

Toothbrush Care

Just like anything else in your home, leaving a toothbrush lying around your home could mean bad news. In order to keep your toothbrush clean, remember to shake it under the tap water in order to remove germs, fungi, and bacteria after brushing. You should also remember to store your toothbrush in an upright position in order for it to dry. Never use a wet toothbrush. Be sure to store your brush away from other’s in your home and use a slotted toothbrush holder to allow your brush to dry without touching other brushes.

Toothbrushes are an important part of taking care of your mouth and should be changed every three to four months in order to avoid the germs and fungi that could be growing in the bristles.
