Sugar leads to bacterial growth and acidity inside of your mouth, which causes plaque to form. Plaque attacks the tooth enamel and gums, which could lead to tooth decay. You won’t have to kick sugar to the curb entirely, but limiting the sweets you eat and brushing and flossing after some sweets will benefit your oral health as a whole.

Stop Smoking

Smoking is terrible for your health, as we all know. No matter how clean they will get when you visit the dentist, if you keep smoking in between appointments, it will undo all of the work that took place during your last appointment. The nicotine and tar in cigarettes can eat away at your gums. It can also increase the production of bacteria and plaque in your mouth, making you more susceptible to tooth decay and gum disease. If you are a regular smoker, you could also be at a higher risk for tooth loss and oral cancer.


Flossing can help you clean places you can’t reach with a toothbrush, which leads to healthier gums and teeth. Similar to brushing, though, flossing won’t be as effective if you aren’t doing it the right way. Improper flossing can lead to damaged gums if you are not careful too.
