3 Ways To Treat Cavities

Cavity and Dental Hygiene

Learn a few of the ways to treat cavities.

Are you taking care of your dental health properly?  If you are slacking on brushing and eating poorly, you might develop a cavity which occurs when plaque sticks to a tooth and eats through the enamel.  According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, almost 24 percent of adults between the ages of 20 and 64 have untreated cavities.  If you think you have a cavity, you need to visit your dentist to seek treatment.

Fluoride Treatment

If you have a cavity that has just developed, your dentist can give you a fluoride treatment to restore the enamel.  Sometimes a fluoride treatment can reverse a cavity if it is in the very early stages. Professional fluoride treatments range from gel to foam that is brushed over your teeth.  It is essential that you are seeing your dentist at least twice a year for regular check-ups so that you have the chance to reverse a cavity.

Fillings and Crowns

One of the main treatment options for cavities are fillings which restores the decay in the tooth.  Fillings usually consist of tooth-colored resins or porcelain. Depending on the extent of the cavity, you may or may not need to novocaine for your filling.  If you have extensive decay, then you will need to crown, which is covering that replaces your tooth’s natural crown. Your dentist will apply your crown by drilling away at the decayed area so that there is a good fit for the covering.

Root Canal

An extensive treatment option to treat a cavity is a root canal.  If you have serious tooth decay that reaches the inner material of the tooth, then a dentist will have to remove the infected material.  Sometimes medication is applied during the procedure if there is any infection. A filling is then applied after the material is extracted.
