Celebrate National Children’s Dental Month

While we celebrate pediatric oral care every day of the year at Catonsville Dental Care, we pay special attention to pediatric dental health during the month of February. Celebrate National Children’s Dental Month with us with these fun facts about your child’s dental health.

When Do Teeth Erupt?

Baby teeth begin to erupt between 6 months old and 1 year old. Most kids have their full set of baby teeth by the time that they are 3 years old. Teething is, obviously, a huge part of pediatric oral care. Many babies struggle with teething and stay up late at night fussing, crying, and struggling to sleep. It’s important to note that fever, diarrhea, and rashes are not part of teething, so if your baby has these symptoms they are not related to the teething process.

When Should You Start Brushing with Toothpaste?

Many parents mistakenly think that adult teeth are the important teeth, but baby teeth are absolutely critical to your child’s oral and overall health. Tooth decay will begin the moment that your child’s baby teeth erupt if they are not properly cared for. Once teeth start erupting, get into the habit for brushing daily so that your children will get familiar and comfortable with the process.

It doesn’t take much toothpaste to do a good job, so use a child size toothbrush and a fluoride toothpaste. If you have a child younger than 3, use a tiny dab of toothpaste the size of a grain of rice. If your child is older, use a pea-sized amount.

When Is It Time for a Trip to the Dentist?

Starting the right pediatric dental health plan early is important for lifetime dental health. After the first baby tooth appears, it’s time for a trip to the dentist. This ensures that they become comfortable with going to the dentist and to get tips for preventing tooth decay.
