Tips to Treating Bleeding Gums

Learn how to prevent and treat bleeding gums.

Of all the common oral care concerns that people encounter, bleeding gums is probably one of the most disturbing. Imaging brushing and flossing your teeth and seeing blood in the sink – it can make you believe that you’ve developed a serious condition. The truth is that bleeding gums should be addressed immediately and there are several potential causes. Here are some tips for treating bleeding gums from oral care professionals.

Practice Good Hygiene

We put the care and health of our teeth in the hands of dentists, but great oral care starts at home. If your gums are bleeding, then it could mean that your oral routine is missing some important factors. A buildup of plaque along the gum line could be the culprit. It covers your mouth in a bacteria-filled film. Inadequate brushing and flossing could eventually lead to gum disease and tooth decay.

If you’ve recently experienced bleeding gums, add rinsing with hydrogen peroxide to your routine. This is used as a disinfectant and is also good for removing plaque. Be careful not to swallow the solution.

Stop smoking

Gingivitis is one of the most common causes of gum bleeding. It is caused by gum inflammation, which can be irritated by smoking. Smoking has also been linked to gum disease and other major chronic illnesses and cancers. Smoking will also lower the effectiveness of your immune system, making you more susceptible to the effects of bacteria.

Take More Vitamins

Be mindful of your nutrition. A lack of vitamin C and vitamin K could also be reasons why you’re experiencing gum bleeding. Vitamin C is great for boosting the immune system and fighting off infections. Vitamin K can help alleviate bleeding because it’s known for helping your blood to clot. Being deficient in these vitamins won’t likely cause the bleeding, but it can worsen it.
