Pediatric Dentistry Catonsville: A Child’s First Visit to the Dentist

Raising a baby is tough work. You have so much to think about, from feedings to bathing to…well, everything! As a parent, you are faced with many tough decisions. Dental care doesn’t have to be one of them.

A Child’s First Visit to the Dentist

A child should make his or her first visit to the dentist before the age of one. This first visit serves many purposes, including: it helps familiarize the child with the dentist, it helps set up the ground work for a life of good oral care, it helps identify any pressing dental issues, and it is a good way to educate parents about how to care for baby teeth.

Tips for Caring for Baby Teeth

  1. Gum Care: Proper oral care begins for the first tooth even appears. Using a soft, moist washcloth, gently wipe your child’s gums twice a day. It is ideal to do this after feeding and before bedtime.
  2. Baby Teeth: Once teeth have started coming in, you can clean these teeth using a wet washcloth. Then, around age one, you can begin using a slight bit of non-flouridated toothpaste. Fluoride toothpaste should not be used until around the age of two.
  3. Flossing: As soon as two teeth touch, you can begin flossing.
  4. Visits to the Dentist: As we have already mentioned, we recommend that infants see a dentist by the age of 1 or within 6 months after their first tooth comes in. Then, the standard every-six-month dental visit recommendation begins.
