Make sure to maintain your oral health over the holidays!

It is officially December meaning it is time celebrate the holidays whether it is Christmas, Hanukkah, or Kwanza.  Spending time with family and loved ones is a special experience for everyone involved, although it can lead to some bad habits.  Holiday meals sometimes consist of foods that are detrimental to your oral health, and your dental care habits may decrease.  Luckily, there a few simple ways to maintain your dental health this holiday season.

Stick To Your Routine

One of the most difficult aspects of the holidays is continuing your dental care routine.  You are seeing family members and are wrapped up in activities that may cause you to miss brushing your teeth.  Although, it is critical that you remember to brush your teeth at least twice a day especially if your sugar intake is increasing over the holiday.  It is wise to keep travel size toothbrush and toothpaste on you so you can brush after a meal.

Limit Your Alcohol Intake

If you are of age, it is perfectly fine to indulge in one or two alcoholic beverages when you are with your family over the holidays.  However, you should be cautious because many drinks contain high amounts of sugar which can lead to cavities.  It is essential that you have a glass of water with each of your alcoholic beverages to wash out all of the sugar.  Drinking too many alcoholic beverages can dry out your mouth leading to a variety of oral health issues.  So it is critical to stay hydrated during the holidays especially if you are indulging in alcohol.

Avoid Hard Candy

You should limit your candy intake over the holidays, especially hard candies because they can lead to you chip or break a tooth.  The last thing you want is going to the dentist because you bit down on a Jolly Rancher.  You should also be aware of eating nuts because they can cause you to chip a tooth as well.
