Pediatric Dental Care (Pedodontics) from Your Friendly Catonsville Dentist

Thursday, July 11th, 2013

Pediatric Dental CareProper dental care starts at a young age. The American Dental Association recommends that a child’s first visit to the dentist be right before their first birthday. This helps teach your child, at an early age, about the importance of proper dental hygiene and so much more, including:

  1. Check for signs of baby bottle tooth decay.
  2. Check gums to ensure they are healthy.
  3. Make sure the child’s teeth are coming in correctly.
  4. Dental sealants can also be applied to protect the teeth from bacteria.

Dental Care Tips for Children

  1. Brushing and Flossing: Proper dental care starts with brushing and flossing. Brushing should begin at the appearance of a child’s first tooth and flossing should begin when two teeth touch each other.
  2. Baby Bottle Decay: When sugars, like those found in milk, formula, and fruit juice, are left exposed to an infant’s teeth for an extended period of time, tooth decay, known as baby bottle tooth decay, can occur. This can lead to pain, infection, and the eventual loss of teeth.
  3. Regular Dental Visits: As we have already mentioned, your child should have his/her first dental visit before their first birthday. In fact, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) found that dental care costs were nearly 40% lower over a five-year period for children who received dental care by age one.

Oral Care Tips for Children :: Pediatric Dentistry in Catonsville, Maryland

Thursday, October 18th, 2012

Astonishingly, tooth decay, a very preventable disease, is the most common chronic disease among children ages 6-11. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, tooth decay is five times more likely than asthma and seven times more likely than hay fever. In fact, by kindergarten, more than 40% of children already have tooth decay.

As you can see, good oral habits are incredibly important and they need to begin at an early age. It is never too early to teach your children proper oral health habits. In fact, as soon as a child’s first tooth appears, good oral hygiene practices should begin too.

“A lot of people think they don’t have to brush baby teeth,” said Beverly Largent, former president of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. “You need to brush from the first tooth.” But brushing is just the beginning.

Oral Care Tips for Children

  1. Proper Brushing and Flossing Habits: Good oral care begins with proper brushing and flossing techniques. Brushing should begin at the appearance of a child’s first tooth and flossing should begin when two teeth touch each other. And “[parents] have to clean the teeth until children are able to tie their shoes or write in cursive,” says Largent. Remember, it is these oral hygiene habits that lay the groundwork for your child’s future oral health.
  2. Baby Bottle Decay“: Baby bottle tooth decay occurs when sugars, like those found in milk, formula, fruit juice, and more, are left exposed to an infant’s teeth for an extended period of time. These sugars promote the growth of bacteria, which produce acids that attack the teeth. And if left untreated, baby bottle tooth decay can lead to pain, infection, and the eventual loss of teeth.
  3. Regular Dental Visits: Your child should have his/her first dental visit before their first birthday. And in case you needed any more motivation, a report published by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) found that dental care costs were nearly 40% lower over a five-year period for children who received dental care by age one.

And that is just the beginning. To find out more, consult with your dentist.

7 Ways to Protect Your Child’s Oral Health

Instances of Cavities in Children are on the Rise :: Pediatric Dentistry

Thursday, July 5th, 2012

Despite being almost entirely preventable, cavities are the most common infectious disease among children. And, for the first time in 40 years, instances of cavities in children are the rise!

Causes of Cavities

Cavities are caused by bacteria that live in the mouth. Over time, these bacteria make excessive acid that contributes to the loss of the hard mineral coat that covers the tooth. And without this protective layer, the tooth becomes vulnerable and may decay.

Preventing Cavities

  • Regular Brushing and Flossing: The key to avoiding cavities is to suppress bacteria in the mouth. This starts with regular brushing and flossing.
  • Avoid Sugary Foods & Drinks: Sugary foods and drinks encourage bacterial growth and acid.
  • Dental Visits: Good dental care and regular dental checkups can go a long way!

Proper dental care and regular trips to the dentist are both extremely important, especially for growing children. In fact, the American Dental Association recommends that a child’s first visit to the dentist be right before their first birthday. This is important for several reasons, including:

  • It teaches your child, at an early age, about the importance of proper dental hygiene.
  • Check to see if there is any baby bottle tooth decay.
  • Ensure that your child’s gums are healthy.
  • Make sure your child’s teeth are coming in correctly.
  • Once all your child’s primary teeth have come in your pediatric dentist will start applying topical fluoride to harden the tooth enamel.
  • Dental sealants can also be applied to protect the teeth from bacteria.

But, let’s face it; children are far different than adults. And because of this, they need to see a dentist that specializes in pedodontics, also known as children’s dentistry.
