3 Back To School Oral Health Tips

Practice great dental hygiene while going into the new school year.

August is coming to end which means that the school year is starting up with kids get their school supplies in order.  While they are learning new information and reuniting with friends, it is important that your child continues a proper oral health routine.  It is crucial as parents that you pass on your oral health regimen to your children and answer any questions they might have.

Start With A Trip To The Dentist

Include a dental cleaning and exam with your child’s other back to school doctor’s appointments such as their yearly physical.  A visit to the dentist allows your child to start the school year with a clean mouth and they can take on good dental habits.  While at the dentist, look into fluoride treatments for your child because they are the best way to prevent cavities.  Nearly one-third of all children miss at least one day of school because of oral health issues, so it is vital to take all the actions to prevent your child of being a part of this statistic.

Pack Their Lunch With Healthy Snacks

One way to prevent cavities is to have a healthy diet of teeth friendly foods and beverages.  Promote healthy eating habits with your child early by packing their lunch with smart snack choices.  Swap out salty and sugary foods such as chips and candy with nuts and celery sticks.  Sugary and salty foods coat teeth with plaque and speed up tooth decay increasing the chances of a cavity.

Be Involved With Their Brushing Routine

An effective way for your child to have good dental hygiene is to brush your teeth with them especially at night.  Plaque builds up while you sleep, so it is crucial to have a good oral health routine at night.  Try to make brushing fun, so it doesn’t seem like a chore.  Play music while they brush their teeth and always check that they are doing it for at least two minutes.  Have them pick out their own toothbrush and make sure it has soft bristles, so it doesn’t damage their gums.
