How Bad Oral Hygiene Could Impact Your Health

Good oral hygiene is so important.

We all know that taking care of our bodies is important, whether it is trying to eat better, trying to move more, or simply taking the time to see the doctor regularly for check-ups. What many people don’t realize is that a key part of their overall health is their dental health. The mouth is a gateway for the rest of the body. We use it to take in nearly all of the key fuel and nutrients our bodies need, but it can also be the gateway for trouble. Any bacteria that is in your mouth could potentially get to other parts of your body as well. This is why good oral hygiene is so important. A good oral care routine that includes brushing twice a day (once at night and once right when you wake up, before you eat) and flossing once a day can help to protect the rest of your body from a lot of seemingly unrelated ailments. Let’s take a look at some of the diseases and conditions that have an increased risk when you have poor dental health.

Heart And Lung Issues Because of Poor Oral Hygiene

People who have periodontal disease have been shown to be twice as likely to suffer a stroke or major heat attack. Likewise, periodontal disease increases the risk that bacteria can enter your bloodstream through your gums and cause respiratory issues. People with periodontal disease are at an increased risk of chronic pneumonia.

Dementia

There have been recent studies that show a possible link between gum disease and dementia. Specifically the bacteria that cause gum disease is also associated with the development of alzheimer’s. Some scientists have suggested that the bacteria and inflammation of gum disease might directly raise the risk of dementia.

Other Physical Conditions Due to Poor Oral Hygiene

Studies have also shown connections between poor oral health and other health conditions, including diabetes and cancer. A strong correlation has been seen between having gum disease and being diagnosed with certain cancers, with diabetes, and with infertility. Poor dental health during pregnancy can also potentially increase the risk for premature birth.

Other Dental Issues

Poor dental hygiene can also lead to serious issues in your dental health. Forgetting to brush can cause bad breath, tooth decay, and eventual cavities or broken teeth. If your dental routine is really lacking, you could develop gingivitis, and mouth sores, or even eventual progress to periodontal disease. Having a good, consistent oral care routine that includes brushing, flossing, and regular cleanings can help lessen the chances of these happening.
