Baby Bottle Tooth Decay & what you need to know :: Catonsville Dentists

Thursday, September 20th, 2012

Oral health is not important in infants, right? After all, their baby teeth will just fall out anyway…

Wrong!

Good oral health is important even at a young age, because healthy baby teeth lead to healthy permanent teeth. And the opposite is true, as well. If an infant’s teeth fall out too early because of poor oral health, the child may develop several problems, including:

  • Poor eating habits
  • Speech problems
  • Crooked teeth
  • Damaged adult teeth

And what is the primary culprit? Baby Bottle Tooth Decay!

Baby bottle tooth decay occurs when sugars, like those found in milk, formula, fruit juice, and more, are left exposed to an infant’s teeth for an extended period of time. These sugars promote the growth of bacteria, which produce acids that attack the teeth. And if left untreated, baby bottle tooth decay can lead to pain, infection, and the eventual loss of teeth.

Preventing Baby Bottle Tooth Decay

  1. Avoid sugary drinks.
  2. After feedings, wipe your baby’s gums with a clean gauze pad or washcloth.
  3. Do not allow your child to fall asleep with a bottle containing anything other than water.
  4. Do not dip your child’s pacifier in any sugary substances.
  5. Brush your baby’s teeth (without toothpaste) when his/her first tooth comes in.
  6. Begin flossing regularly once all of your infant’s baby teeth have come in.
  7. Ensure that your child is getting enough fluoride.
  8. Schedule regular visits with the dentist.

Instances of Cavities in Children are on the Rise :: Pediatric Dentistry

Thursday, July 5th, 2012

Despite being almost entirely preventable, cavities are the most common infectious disease among children. And, for the first time in 40 years, instances of cavities in children are the rise!

Causes of Cavities

Cavities are caused by bacteria that live in the mouth. Over time, these bacteria make excessive acid that contributes to the loss of the hard mineral coat that covers the tooth. And without this protective layer, the tooth becomes vulnerable and may decay.

Preventing Cavities

  • Regular Brushing and Flossing: The key to avoiding cavities is to suppress bacteria in the mouth. This starts with regular brushing and flossing.
  • Avoid Sugary Foods & Drinks: Sugary foods and drinks encourage bacterial growth and acid.
  • Dental Visits: Good dental care and regular dental checkups can go a long way!

Leikin & Baylin Dental Care: Pedodontics (Children’s Dentistry)

Wednesday, April 18th, 2012

Proper dental care and regular trips to the dentist are both extremely important, especially for growing children. In fact, the American Dental Association recommends that a child’s first visit to the dentist be right before their first birthday. This is important for several reasons, including:

  • It teaches your child, at an early age, about the importance of proper dental hygiene.
  • Check to see if there is any baby bottle tooth decay.
  • Ensure that your child’s gums are healthy.
  • Make sure your child’s teeth are coming in correctly.
  • Once all your child’s primary teeth have come in your pediatric dentist will start applying topical fluoride to harden the tooth enamel.
  • Dental sealants can also be applied to protect the teeth from bacteria.

But, let’s face it; children are far different than adults. And because of this, they need to see a dentist that specializes in pedodontics, also known as children’s dentistry.

Dr. Leikin and Dr. Baylin of Leikin & Baylin Dental Care of Catonsville offer high quality, comprehensive dental care geared towards children and adolescents. Our pediatric dental services include: regular dental visits and preventative treatments, fillings, aesthetic restorations, mouth guards, and much more!

Make sure the kids ask to see Dr. Baylin’s famous magic tricks!
