How to Stay Cavity Free During the Holiday Season

Maintain your oral health this holiday season!

We wish that most children wanted to grow up to be a dentist. But unlike our favorite holiday character, Hermes, most children and adults alike have a difficult time taking care of their teeth during the holiday season. By following these tips, you can maintain your oral health this holiday season, without sacrificing your favorite treats.

Watch Your Alcohol Intake

Alcoholic beverages come disguised in sugary sweet treats like egg nog or buttered rum. A beverage is a fine and dandy thing to enjoy if you’re of age, but keep in mind that it could be damaging your oral health. Ensure that you pair your beverage with a glass of water to wash the sugar from your teeth, and keep in mind that too much alcohol can dry out your mouth!

Beware Of Hard Candy

Some candies cause more issues than others. Hard candies can put your teeth at risk because they’re full of sugar and difficult to chew. Some hard candies have been known to cause broken or chipped teeth!

Take Timing Into Consideration

If you’re going to indulge this holiday season, plan accordingly. It helps to consume sweets with meals or shortly after mealtime. The increased saliva production that occurs when you eat meals helps to cancel out acids produced by bacteria in your mouth.

Skip The Store, Bake!

Store bought sweets have a tendency to contain an excessive amount of sugar and starches. Limit your sugar intake by baking the sweets yourself. Honey, agave nectar, and prune paste are perfectly acceptable sugar substitutes that make your holiday cookies taste great without causing any issues to your oral health.
