How to Brush Your TeethBrushing your teeth is one of the most important parts of oral hygiene. It is the front line of protection from tooth decay and plaque. It is very important that you know how to properly care for your teeth in order to maintain oral health as well as your overall health. The cleaner and healthier your teeth are, the healthier you’re likely to be as a person. Ever wondered about the proper technique for brushing?

  • Two Minute Time Limit – Make sure you’re brushing for at least two minutes. If you don’t achieve this amount of time while brushing, you aren’t taking care of your teeth properly. Use short gentle strokes during this time, and don’t forget to focus carefully on the gum line; that’s where a lot of plaque will build up.
  • Know Where to Brush – Tilt your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to your gum line to make sure you get all of the plaque off. To brush your teeth effectively, make sure you get the outside, inside, and chewing surface of every tooth. You want to make sure each tooth is cleaned in its entirety to avoid decay.
  • Don’t Neglect the Tongue! – Your tongue collects bacteria just like the rest of your mouth. Make sure you brush your tongue with some toothpaste, as well, to avoid bad breath and kill the bacteria that have settled on the surface of your tongue.

It is important to make sure that you are also using a soft bristled toothbrush with effective toothpaste to get the most out of your brushing. Replace your toothbrush every 3 months or when it starts to wear down. Toothbrushes are fairly inexpensive and your dentist will generally give you one after your preventive cleaning every six months.

When the gum tissue begins to pull away from the tooth, exposing more of each tooth or even the root, this is what is referred to as receding gums. And while this may not seem like the end of the world, gum recession is actually a very serious condition and one of the first warning signs of gum disease. And if left untreated, the supporting tissue and bone structures of the teeth can be severely damaged, which could result in tooth loss.

What Causes Gums to Recede?

Receding gums can be caused by a number of factors, including:

How are Receding Gums Treated?

  • Severe Gum Recession: If too severe for deep cleaning to have any effect, gum surgery may be required.

Habits That Are Bad For Your Teeth

Bad TeethAs people, we tend to fall into some pretty bad habits, several of which can damage our teeth. So do your best to avoid these Bad Habits that lead to Bad Teeth:

  1. Chewing on Ice: After you are done downing that glass of ice-cold water, what is left? Ice. Why wouldn’t you chew on it? Well, for starters, it is bad for your teeth. Chewing on ice can irritate the soft tissue inside the tooth, causing toothaches. Chewing on ice can even chip or crack your pearly whites. Ouch! So next time you have the urge to chew on some ice, grab that sugar-free gum instead.
  2. Playing Sports without a Mouth Guard: Playing sports is great for so many reasons, including exercise and teaching teamwork. Playing sports without a proper mouth guard is bad for one reason: damaged teeth. Without a mouth guard, your teeth could be chipped, broken, or even knocked out while playing soccer, football, baseball, or any number of other sports.
  3. Grinding Your Teeth: Bruxism, known to the public as teeth grinding, can wear your teeth down over time. Unfortunately, many of us do not even know we have a problem. This is because the majority of teeth grinding occurs at night. If you are experiencing unexplained jaw pain or headaches and suspect you may be grinding your teeth, schedule an appointment with your dentist at your earliest convenience.   8. Drinking Coffee: Are you one of the millions of Americans that struggle to get out of bed in the morning? Have you ever uttered the phrase, “just five more minutes?” If so, you probably also rely on everyone’s favorite pick-me-up, coffee. And while coffee may help you through the drudgery of your morning commute, it can also yellow your teeth over time. Yuck!

4.) Fluoride is key. Use toothpaste or gel with fluoride. This will help prevent the development of dental caries
