Eating Healthy is Good for Your Teeth, Too!

Remember to eat your leafy greens!

October is Eat Better, Eat Together Month as sponsored by the national Health and Wellness Association. Family meals provide the ideal opportunity for socializing and exchanging ideas with other people. As technology grows, it’s easy to distance ourselves from one another by taking our dinners to the T.V. room or allowing phones at the table. In October, we celebrate the old-fashioned ideals of eating healthy meals at the table together. This not only promotes family time, but oral health as well.

Foods that Harm your Teeth

Foods high in sugar such as candies, cakes, muffins, and certain snack foods are a cause for dental concern. They offer no nutritional value, and the sugars they contain can stick to teeth. The bacteria in your mouth feed off those sugars and eventually lead to tooth decay. Sugar-containing drinks such as juice, soda, and sweetened coffee are particularly harmful because the sugar is able to cover the teeth more evenly than any sugary foods.

You should eat acidic foods such as tomatoes and citrus fruits as part of a meal and not alone, as their high acidity can cause harm to your teeth as well. Avoid sticky foods such as raisins, as they adhere to teeth easier.

Foods that Promote Dental Health

Foods high in calcium such as milk, cheese, plain yogurt, leafy greens, and almonds are great for your teeth. Foods high in proteins such as meat, poultry, and eggs play a critical role in dental health as good sources of phosphorous, protecting tooth enamel.

Drinking lots of water is not only a part of a healthy diet but good for your teeth as well!
