Gingivitis & Gum Disease :: Catonsville Dental Care

Wednesday, July 25th, 2012

Believe it or not, Gingivitis and Gum Disease are not the same thing. That is a common misconception. Gingivitis, which is an inflammation of the gums, typically precedes gum disease, medically known as Periodontal Disease. It is important to note that not all cases of gingivitis will progress to periodontitis!

  • Gingivitis: Bacteria and plaque build up in the mouth, causing the gums to become inflamed. When gingivitis is left untreated, it can advance to gum disease.
  • Gum Disease: With gum disease, the inner layer of gum and bone pull away from the teeth, forming pockets. These pockets become breeding grounds for bacteria and start to break down the bone and connective tissues that hold the teeth in place. If not properly treated, gum disease may result in tooth loss.

Signs and Symptoms of Gum Disease

  • Bleeding gums
  • Swollen or tender gums
  • Constant bad breath
  • Receding gums
  • Deep pockets between the teeth and gums
  • Loose teeth

Treating Gum Disease

The goal of treatment is threefold:

  1. Promote the reattachment of healthy gums to teeth
  2. Reduce swelling, the depth of the pockets, and the risk of infection
  3. Stop the progression of gum disease

Treatment options range from nonsurgical therapies that control bacterial growth to surgery to restore supportive tissues.

An Overview of Tooth Decay :: Catonsville Dental Care

Thursday, July 12th, 2012

Last week, we gave you a brief overview of Cavities and Cavity Prevention. This week, we are going to focus on the process that eventually results in a cavity…Tooth Decay!

Tooth decay occurs when bacteria build up in the mouth, creating acids that slowly eat away at the teeth. Tooth decay usually does not cause symptoms until you have a cavity or an infected tooth. If not properly treated, tooth decay can cause pain, infection, cavities, and the eventual loss of the affected tooth.

Preventing Tooth Decay

  1. Good Oral Hygiene: Regular brushing and flossing is the first step in preventing tooth decay.
  2. Eating Right: Do your best to avoid foods with high sugar content.
  3. Regular Dental Checkups: Dr. Leikin and Dr. Baylin of Leikin & Baylin Dental Care of Catonsville offer high quality, comprehensive dental care, including regular dental visits, preventative treatments, fillings, aesthetic restorations, and much more!

Treating Tooth Decay

The appropriate treatment for tooth decay depends on the severity of the decay.

  • Slight Tooth Decay: In these instances, the use of fluoride may help reverse the decay.
  • Mild Tooth Decay: These are the situations that typically result in cavities. To treat this level of tooth decay, your dentist will drill out the cavity and use a filling to fill the gap.
  • Severe Tooth Decay: Severe cases of tooth decay may need a dental crown or root canal.
  • Extreme Tooth Decay: If the tooth decay is extreme enough, the tooth will have to be removed.

If you have any questions about Tooth Decay or Oral Health, or wish to schedule an appointment, please contact Leikin & Baylin Dental Care of Catonsville, Maryland by calling 410-747-1115 or visit CatonsvilleDentalCare.com.

Instances of Cavities in Children are on the Rise :: Pediatric Dentistry

Thursday, July 5th, 2012

Despite being almost entirely preventable, cavities are the most common infectious disease among children. And, for the first time in 40 years, instances of cavities in children are the rise!

Causes of Cavities

Cavities are caused by bacteria that live in the mouth. Over time, these bacteria make excessive acid that contributes to the loss of the hard mineral coat that covers the tooth. And without this protective layer, the tooth becomes vulnerable and may decay.

Preventing Cavities

  • Regular Brushing and Flossing: The key to avoiding cavities is to suppress bacteria in the mouth. This starts with regular brushing and flossing.
  • Avoid Sugary Foods & Drinks: Sugary foods and drinks encourage bacterial growth and acid.
  • Dental Visits: Good dental care and regular dental checkups can go a long way!
